Until 2009, it was illegal in Colorado, and by extension Aurora, to catch rain for private use since the rainwater was considered property of the state.

The largest catfish ever caught in Colorado was bagged in the Aurora Reservoir in 2010. The mammoth fish weighed over 35 pounds.

In 1942, the Army Air Corps built Buckley Field, which has been renamed Naval Air Station, Buckley Air National Guard Base, Buckley Air Force Base, and finally Buckley Space Force Base. The base, home of the Buckley Garrison and the 140th Wing Colorado Air National Guard, is far and away the biggest employer in Aurora, with over 12,000 employees.
