The highest point on Kahoolawe is Lua Makika ("Mosquito Hole"), the eroded remnant of a crater at the summit of Pu'u Moaulanui, which is about 1,477 feet (450 m) above sea level.

By state law, Kahoolawe and its waters can be used only for Native Hawaiian cultural, spiritual, and subsistence purposes, such as fishing, preservation, and education. All commercial uses are prohibited.
