Yorktown is most famous as the site of the siege and subsequent surrender of General Charles Cornwallis to General George Washington and the French Fleet during the American Revolutionary War on October 19, 1781. Although the fighting would continue for another year, the British defeat at Yorktown effectively ended the war.
The world's largest roller-skate is located at Rollerworks Family Skating Center in Bealeton, Virginia. Originally created as a float for a fireman's parade, it stands 10 feet tall, 5 feet wide and 11 feet deep.
The town of Ashburn in Loudoun County, Virginia is a major hub for data centers. In fact, about seventy percent of the world's internet traffic passes through Ashburn, which is why it is known as "Data Center Alley, "The Silicon Valley of the East", and "The Cloud Capital of the World".
With a summit elevation of 5,729 feet (1,746 m) above mean sea level, Mount Rogers is the highest natural point in Virginia. The mountain is named for William Barton Rogers, Virginia's first State Geologist. Because the Appalachian Trail passes within a half mile of the summit, the area is especially popular with hikers.
Some estimates place the original size of the Great Dismal Swamp at over one million acres (4,000 km2), stretching from Norfolk, Virginia, to Edenton, North Carolina.
When Jamestown was abandoned in 1699, Hampton assumed the mantle of oldest continuously-inhabited English settlement in North America. Originally settled by colonists in 1610, it was named for Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, an important leader of the Virginia Company of London, for whom the Hampton River, Hampton Roads and Southampton County were also named.
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the banks of the James River, Lynchburg is known as the "City of Seven Hills" for the seven hills that are spread throughout the region: College Hill, Garland Hill, Daniel's Hill, Federal Hill, Diamond Hill, White Rock Hill, and Franklin Hill.
The state flower is not really a flower at all, but the blossom of the dogwood tree, which is also the state tree.
