A gypsy woman, old Mother Bunches, arrives from a nearby camp and insists upon telling fortunes, but it turns out to be Mr. Rochester, playing a prank on his guests.

Jane receives marriage proposals from Edward Rochester and St. John Rivers.

Adèle is Jane's pupil at Thornfield, a little French girl just under ten years old, the daughter of Céline Varens, an opera dancer who was Rochester's mistress.

It has been suggested that Brontë based Thornfield on Haddon Hall, near Bakewell, Derbyshire, although the evidence for this is unclear; it is perhaps based on filmmakers' use for some of the novel's on-screen adaptations.

Attempting to rescue Bertha, Mr. Rochester loses a hand and his eyesight, but Jane loves him anyway. He eventually recovers sight enough to see their newborn son.
