One of Plant's earliest songwriting attempts, "What Is and What Should Never Be" is allegedly about an affair with his wife's younger sister. Its woozy production and bulldozer gearshifts from tender, pastoral verse to demon-steed chorus make for music strung between lover's plea and torrid fantasy.

Just like Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix, to name a few surprising others, Led Zeppelin never managed to climb to the top of the charts. The highest rank the band ever achieved on the Billboard Hot 100 was in 1969, when "Whole Lotta Love" hit No. 4.

When played live, "Moby Dick" would last as little as 6 minutes or, more frequently, as long as 30 minutes, while the rest of the band would leave the stage after having played the introduction. During the performance Bonham would often throw his drumsticks into the audience and then continue the solo with his hands, sometimes drawing blood as a result.

In December 2007, Robert Plant was named the "beard of the year" by the Beard Liberation Front, an informal network of British beard wearers, beating Liverpool FC manager Rafael Benitez into second place. Beard Liberation Front organizer Keith Flett told BBC News: "The winners this year have stylish beards and are promoting a new 21st Century image of the hirsute."

After John Bonham's death from alcohol-related asphyxia in 1980, Led Zeppelin chose to disband out of respect to their deceased bandmate. They said in a press release on 4 December 1980: "We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were." It was signed "Led Zeppelin".
